Product Development Process
A four step process to understand your platform type and then develop it.
01
Understand the Market and Desired Benefits
The initial phase involves a thorough understanding of the target market segment and geographic regions. This analysis is crucial in defining the Minimum Viable Product (MVP), ensuring the product aligns with market needs and regulatory requirements.
02
Balance Standardization and Customization
Once the MVP is defined, it's time to find the right balance between creating a standardized product and allowing for flexibility in design. This involves setting clear goals for cost, speed, and certainty, and then evaluating how much standardization is needed to achieve those goals.
03
Define the Products Housed in the Product Platform
Before the team dives into full development, it is important to define the roadmap. This is done by defining how much of a building typology's program is accomplished through products and industrialized construction, versus conventional methods.
04
Develop each Defined Product
With the roadmap in hand from step 3, the team is now able to fully develop each part of the productized system. This includes high fidelity building information models which can inform cost analysis. TAPD utilized a design thinking framework to fully vet each product prior to implementaiton.
Utilization of Design Thinking
During step 4 - Develop Product, the Design Thinking Roadmap is a helpful tool to fully explore more complex products.
Implementing Products
Product platforms offer exceptional efficiency by enabling the deployment of standardized components across various projects. This reusability minimizes design and engineering efforts, leading to rapid cost recovery and enhanced profitability.
Engineer-to-Order
AEC Industry Baseline
All construction projects are at least Engineer-to-Order [ETO]. There are some things that are known, like the structural capacity of lumber or the burn rate of gypsum.
Modify-to-Order
Industrialized Construction Baseline
Most industrialized construction manufacturers have requirements on how to build up walls and floors [assemblies] and how modules or panels should connect on site [interfaces]. Otherwise, Modify-to-Order [MTO] is very similar to ETO.
Configure-to-Order
Mass Customization
Configure-to-Order [CTO] offers customer or project choice when designing projects. CTO provides a good balance between standardization and controlled flexibility.
Select-to-Order
Catalog of Choices
Select-to-Order [STO] is the most standardized option and is ideal for systems needling little to know variation. The project reconciliation phase is required to show that the product complies with geographic requirements [like seismic, wind and snow loads]
Partner Companies for Project Delivery
For architectural and structural engineering services needed for project delivery, please our partner companies. For developed product platforms, project delivery can be performed faster and with less soft cost.
Product Maintenance
Product platforms serve as dynamic knowledge repositories, accumulating valuable insights with every project. This iterative learning process empowers developers and manufacturers to refine costs, streamline the supply chain, and perfect design details over time.
